Comment interview-t-on une femme politique juste avant les présidentielles ? Loin de nous l’idée de demander un prêche pour quelconque paroisse à quelques jours d’un scrutin qui nous met déjà en PLS. Non, nous, ce qu'on voulait, c'était trouver un peu de réconfort et d’idées fraîches pour survivre à ce scrutin qui s’annonce chaotique. Notre invitée est la femme politique française, économiste écologiste et féministe Sandrine Rousseau. Celle qui dérange par sa présence sur les plateaux, par ses idées éco-féministes, par son amour pour un homme "déconstruit". Celle qui a dénoncé son agresseur alors qu’il était membre de son propre parti. Celle qui nous a parlé d’artistes queer et de théoriciennes révolutionnaires. Un peu de force pour les jours à venir. En raccrochant, elle nous dit « Courage, et sororité ! » et on se dit qu’on a fait le bon choix pour cette dernière Gaze Letter avant les urnes. How do you interview a politician right before a major election (on Sunday, the French will elect their president)? We're not really the kind to promote anyone a few days before an election that is already a source of great anxiety. No, what we wanted was to find a little comfort and fresh ideas to survive this election that will no doubt be chaotic. Our guest is the French politician, ecologist and feminist advocate Sandrine Rousseau. The one whose very presence on TV is a source of disruption, because of her eco-feminist ideas, her love for a "deconstructed" man. The one who denounced her attacker even though he was a member of her own party. The one who talked about queer artists and revolutionary theorists. A source of strength for the days to come. As we hung up, she said "Stay strong, sisters!" and we told ourselves that we made the right choice for this last Gaze Letter before the polls. "PORTRAIT DE LA JEUNE FILLE EN FEU" / "PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE", CÉLINE SCIAMMA (2019)
Ce film s'intéresse à un thème qui est, à mon sens, peu évoqué : l’homosexualité dans l'interdit total. Ce que ça génère chez les personnes qui s'aiment. Le traitement de la passion dans ce film est exceptionnel. Et puis, on a pu voir Adèle Haenel devenir membre de l'Académie des Oscars. Le pouvoir transformateur de ce film est énorme.
This film tackles a topic that in my eyes is too little evoked: homosexuality when it is totally forbidden. What it produces for people who love each other. The treatment of passion in this film is exceptional. And it made Adèle Haenel a member of the Academy of the Oscars. This film has an enormous transformative power.
"RECLAIM", Emilie Hache (Camourakis, 2016)
C’était après l’affaire Baupin (pour harcèlement et agressions sexuelles, NDLR). J’avais arrêté la politique. J’avais mal, et j’essayais de comprendre pourquoi ça avait déclenché autant de haine et de passions. Qu’est ce qui laissait un homme agir comme cela? C’est en lisant ce livre que j’ai commencé à comprendre le lien entre écologie et féminisme. Être écolo et féministe ne suffit pas. Il faut être écoféministe. Apprendre cela m’a ouvert un champ de reflexion : la possibilité de militer différemment.
It was after the Baupin case (in 2016, French deputy speaker Denis Baupin was accused of sexual harassment and assault by several colleagues, including Rousseau, editor’s note). I had quit politics. I was in pain, and I was trying to understand why it had triggered so much hatred and passion. What was it that let a man act like that? By reading this book, I began to understand the link between ecology and feminism. Being an ecologist and/or a feminist is not enough. You have to be an ecofeminist. Learning this opened up a field of reflection for me: the possibility of a different kind of activism.

Quand j’étais enceinte de mes deux filles, je mettais cette chanson non stop à tue tête pour qu’elles l’entendent à fond, et qu’elles naissent féministes ! Ça reste une des chansons qu’on écoute quand on est ensemble, elle nous réunit.
When I was pregnant with my two daughters, I used to play this song non-stop so that they would hear it and be born feminists! It is still one of the songs that we listen to when we are together, it's really unifying.
